Santa Fe Sierra Club Group Receives National Sierra Club Award
SAN FRANCISCO Sept. 23, 2000 The Santa Fe Group of the Sierra Club was
among those receiving national recognition from the Sierra Club this fall.
The group received the national Sierra Clubs Denny and Ida Wilcher Award, which
honors outstanding achievement in the area of membership and/or fundraising. The group
received the award for fundraising accomplished through its publication of Day Hikes in
the Santa Fe Area.
Day Hikes in the Santa Fe Area was first published in 1981. The fifth edition of
the book was published in December 1999 and contains information on more than 60 area
hikes. The 260-page book also contains a glossary of hiking terms, useful addresses and
phone numbers, and suggestions of books for further reading.
The book has always been an all-volunteer project. All proceeds from the book during
the past 19 years have gone to fund conservation projects in the Santa Fe area.
The Sierra Club, which was founded in 1892 by John Muir, is the countrys oldest
and largest grassroots environmental organization. It currently has more than 600,000
