Dirty Fuels

"It's one thing for society to be saddled with an existing energy strategy that could results in dangerous climate change; it's another thing when new technologies are exploited that push us closer to climate disaster - and that is what the commercialization of unconventional fossil fuels would do."
-Paul Monaghan, Head of Social Goals and Sustainability, The Co-operative Group

Tar Sands

Oil Sands
Tar sands are the most destructive oil project on Earth. They're sneaking across our border right now.

Oil Shale

Western Colorado's mountains are being eyed as potential extraction sites for oil shale.
Squeezing oil from shale mountains is not an option that would allow our planet and its inhabitants to survive.

Liquid Coal

Liquid Coal
Liquid coal releases almost double the global warming emissions per gallon as regular gasoline.

Transportation accounts for roughly 30% of our nation's greenhouse gas emissions. However, while most of America is looking for ways to reduce our emissions, the oil industry is quietly investing in new fossil fuels. These fossil fuels have higher carbon emissions and are much more expensive to procure than conventional oil. As a result they cost more for us to use, and they have a greater negative impact on the earth than traditional fuels. At a time when we need to drastically reduce greenhouse gases, these unconventional fuels are threatening catastrophic climate change. In fact, fully exploiting just one of these types of fuels has the potential to cancel out all the positive climate initiatives going on right now around the world.
