Inner City Outings

ICO volunteers and kids

"I can develop minds in a classroom but I can only work on spirit, soul, and character in the woods."

-- ICO agency teacher Philadelphia, PA

As an ICO volunteer, you have the opportunity to share the out of doors with underserved youth on any variety of outings: a day hike to local wilderness area; a bicycle, backpack, camp, canoe, kayak, cross-country ski or river raft trip; or a service project in beautiful open spaces. You will teach these kids to safely enjoy the outdoor world beyond the confines of their homes, schools, and television screens.

If you have the time to invest in a day or week-long program; if you have been trained to work with a younger population and you enjoy sharing a life-changing experience with them; or you just want to connect youth with the outdoors, you could make a great Inner City Outings leader.

To find the group closest to you, please refer to the ICO Local Contact List.

Think you'd like to be a leader? Great!

What are my responsibilities as an ICO leader?

  • Create a new trip or update a former trip and coordinate the outing planning with the partnering agency staff.
  • Conduct a pre trip meeting with the participants to answer questions and prepare for the trip.
  • Lead your outing and follow up with agency staff and ICO volunteer leadership after the trip.

What rewards will I receive as an ICO leader:

  • Designing a trip that creates an eye-opening experience for youth.
  • The satisfaction of connecting young people to the outdoors and experiencing their personal growth.

Steps to becoming an ICO leader:

  • Be a current Sierra Club member and at least 18 years old.
  • Find the group closest to you and contact the volunteer ICO Outing Chair.
  • Complete the ICO Volunteer Application, Code of Ethics, and Volunteer Agreement and submit these to your local ICO Chair.
  • Complete a basic first aid class (or higher).
  • Complete the Sierra Club Outing Leader Training 101 and Child Abuse Recognition and Prevention Training (and OLT 201 if you are interested in leading overnight outings away from cars).
  • Complete additional training as required by your Outings Chair.
  • Be a volunteer or assistant leader on an Inner City Outing.
  • Provisionally lead two outings under the guidance of an experienced leader and be certified to lead by your Outing Chair.
  • Lead your very own outing!
