John Muir Print by Art Smith

In 1990, Wawona Press commissioned the exceptionally intuitive Art Smith to execute an original portrait of John Muir to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Yosemite National Park.

John Muir, more than any other individual and with his 1890 Century Magazine articles, was successful in preserving Yosemite as the "crown jewel" of our present national park system.

Thus while celebrating a great park's centennial year, October 1990 to October 1991, we also honor Muir who with his "eye within the eye" was the first to recognize and so state that everything on this planet is interconnected. This concept, perhaps not well understood by Muir's generation, has become increasingly clear to our own.

The "Yosemite Edition" of this John Muir Print is limited to 1,200 impressions. The four color process has been utilized to capture the subtle brush strokes of the original transparent watercolor. Lithographed on acid-free archival quality paper the print measure 19" high by 12" wide and is offered in three formats:

  • Signed and Numbered Artist's Proof
    15 impressions at $100.00 each.
  • Signed and Numbered Print
    85 impressions at $50.00 each
  • Print signed on the plate
    1,100 impressions at $10.00 each

About the Artist

Art Smith graduated from the School of Allied Arts in Glendale, California. His studies were continued at the Otis Art Institute and the Art Center College of Design. The artist's expertise in watercolor was further developed in workshops with Rex Brandt, Robert E. Wood and Milford Zomes.

Until recently Mr. Smith was Director of Design, for University Development, at the University of Southern California. He also served as the Senior Lecturer in Publication Design at the University's School of Journalism. The quality of Mr. Smith's work has been acknowledged by the many awards received from two national organizations: the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the University and College Designers Association.

Leaving the university has afforded the artist the opportunity to devote his creative energies to the fascinating intricacy of watercolor portraiture and figure painting.
