John Muir in New England

presentation by J. Parker Huber

My presentation, last one Friday morning, 19 April 1996 in Martinez, California, is titled "John Muir in New England." It will summarize Muir's five trips to New England, and then move into 1898, his longest stay in New England, focusing on the October week wherein he traveled by train across northern New England. I will focus on what Muir saw and did, using his journal and letters. It will capture Muir as solo tourist and of New England in fin de siècle. Part of this has been published in The Concord Saunterer (The Thoreau Society, Inc.) Fall, 1995, 105-111, "John Muir and Thoreau's Maine."
