Lowell Krassner Remembered
Lowell Krassner, one of the Sierra Club's most effective citizen
activists, passed away in mid-January.
A member and activist for over three decades, he most recently served
as the Vermont Chapter conservation chair. He was also a member of the
War on the Environment Campaign steering committee and the Club's Great
Northern Forest Ecoregion task force.
"Krassner and his wife Dianne Geerkin were the heart and soul of the
Vermont Chapter," said George Webb, vice-chair of the chapter executive
committee. "His enthusiasm inspired us into action and we'll have a
tough time filling the hole he left."
Krassner was instrumental in the passage of the Vermont Wilderness Act
in 1984 and represented the Club in a wide range of forest protection
issues.
"Krassner was one of the most effective, articulate volunteers I've
ever had the pleasure of working with," added Chris Ballantyne,
Northeast regional director. "He was known for his uncanny ability to
pull together activists around the kitchen table and hammer out
creative strategies for land and forest."
