Use Wood?

The Planet, June 1997, Volume 4, number 5

Looking to add on that room or build a deck without contributing to clearcutting, habitat loss, soil erosion and stream destruction? The Forest Stewardship Council, an independent, non profit, non governmental organization founded in part by the Sierra Club, is working to see that you can ask for eco-friendly timber by name and quickly recognize its distinctive label. Since 1993, the FSC has advocated for a global certification program for timber products to support environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world's forests -- and to counter big industry efforts to confuse consumers with pale green claims.
