A Bad Day for Big Chicken

Lorraine Jackson of the Circle of Leaders (left) gets a hug from Maryland Sierra Club activist Bonnie Bick at the conclusion of a day-long joint effort by farmers, Sierra Club members and African-Americans, registering 1,000 new voters on Maryland's lower Eastern Shore. This alliance is attempting to wrest political control away from the giant poultry corporations, known as "Big Chicken." These corporations don't just pollute the state's waterways, but through their ownership structures and financial clout, effectively make smaller chicken growers indentured servents and deny African-Americans and other disadvantaged groups access to political and economic opportunity.
