Department of Justice Reopens Investigation!
After "The Cost of Doing Business" broke on April 15, 2004, the US Attorney's Office in Denver — which had dropped its investigation of Echo Bay with the excuse that the statute of limitations had run — reactivated the case. Here is the very terse statement offered by press spokesman Jeff Dorschner at the Denver office:
"To the extent that there are questions about the application of the Patriot Act and statute of limitations, the Patriot Act extended the statute of limitations for certain terrorism related crimes from 5 years to 8 years for crimes on which the statute had not expired as of the effective date of the act (10/26/01). If any advice to the contrary was given, that advise was incorrect. Having said that, because this matter remains under investigation we are unable to comment further."
