If people knew half the stuff that's happened to me on the water, no one would ever boat with me again. There was the time, for example, that I was running the Bogus Thunder Rapid on the north fork of California's American River with a newbie. Ryan Clark is a whitewater guide for the San Francisco Bay Rafting Chapter of the Sierra Club's Inner City Outings.
"Getting a raft stuck on rocks can be scary, especially at the entrance to a major rapid. Keep calm—acting hastily can make the situation worse. Thoughtfully and carefully shifting weight is often the best way to unstick a raft, and giving frightened paddlers something proactive to do is an excellent way to redirect their fear."
