Hartman-Hammond Road and Bridge, Michigan

This Traverse City project would fill more than five acres of wetlands and destroy a blue-ribbon trout stream. Every day, 27,000 noisy, polluting cars would pass through the town entrance on Lake Michigan. The local town council opposes the project and a coalition of groups, representing 23,000 Michigan citizens, is proposing a "Smart-Roads" plan that calls for improving existing road connections, upgrading public transit, and providing space for cycling and walking.
