In Vermont, Sierra Club has declared the following position on highway construction in
general:
The Vermont Sierra Club is opposed to all new highway, belt-line, by-pass, ring road
and circumferential highway construction because they only increase traffic, sprawl, and
environmental impact while undermining investment in better alternatives. The Club is
calling for continued focus on the State's current long range transportation plan. The
plan supports reinvestment in existing roads, bridges and rights of way and increased
investment in public transportation.
Specifically, the roads we oppose are the Circumferential Highway and the Bennington
Bypass. We have nominated the Circ Highway for a Road to Ruin Award.
