Students Supported John Muir Quarter Design!
Santa Monica's John Muir Elementary School showed its
support for the John Muir / Yosemite California State Quarter. back in 2004 and 2005. Students
representing grades 2 through 5 are seen in front of a nature mural holding a
3' X 10' banner featuring the coin design and "Celebrate Nature's Hero. Mint
Muir, California State Quarter." The web site listed was www.johnmuir.info/coin
- the predecessor to the John Muir California State Quarter pages on this website.
Many consider John Muir the father of the national parks and one of the
greatest figures in American conservation. States are encouraged to submit
designs that promote the diffusion of knowledge among the youth of the United
States about the state, its history and geography, and the rich diversity of
our national heritage.
The coin design was created by graphic designer Garrett Burke, a longtime
West Los Angeles resident and Muir admirer.
The banner was displayed on campus for severalweeks. Principal
Patty Flynn hept the classes informed of the coin design's progress as a
finalist for the official California commemorative coin. Governor Schwarzenegger ultimately chose the John Muir-Yosemite design out of the six finalist coin ideas submitted to the U.S. Mint for further development. Judging from opinion
columns and news articles, their schools namesake received tremendous support and momentum across the state.
