Muir Coin for Every [Dunbar, Scotland] Schoolchild in Town
Every school child in Dunbar [Scotland] and the surrounding area is being presented
with a special quarter dollar coin which depicts well-known conservationist John
Muir.
The coin has been produced to commemorate the State of California joining
the United States of America in September 1850.
Members of Dunbar Rotary Club have taken it upon themselves to present almost
2,000 of the coins which were put into circulation in America in January.
The new 25 cent piece design was created by Garrett Burke and also shows
Yosemite Valley, one of the many national parks in the US which Dunbar-born
Muir founded. California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger chose the final design
which will act as a lasting reminder of Muir's role in American conservation.
Each day this week, rotarians, in groups of three and four, attended Dunbar
Grammar School to present the children from each year group with their own
coin.
Pupils at Dunbar, West Barns, Innerwick and East Linton Primaries as well
as Belhaven Hill School are to receive their coins next week.
It is expected that a number of coins will also be on display at the John
Muir Birthplace Museum in Dunbar High Street.
