This Medallion is the Official California American Revolution Bicentennial Medallion, prepared by the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of California in 1976. It was minted by The Lincoln Mint, One S. Wacker Dr., Chicago, Ill. 60606.

The obverse of this design depicts a portrait of John Muir, with a backdrop of Yosemite Valley's Half Dome and a grove of Giant Sequoia trees. The legend reads "Conservation Pioneer." The reverse side depicts the American Revolution Bicentennial logo, with text reading: "Official California Medallion - Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land - 1976 - American Revolution Bicentennial 1776-1976."

Daniel Alonzo, 18-year old senior at Santa Monica High School, Won a $1,500 scholarship award for his design of the 1976 California American Revolution Bicentennial Medallion. Dan's winning design shows conservationist John Muir against a view of the famed Half Dome rock formation in Yosemite National Park, whose establishment is largely due to Muir's efforts.

Besides drawing and art, which he's done for several years, Alonzo is also interested in photography. He plans to pursue his scholarship grant to pursue a career in art at the Art Center College of Design.
