John Muir Memorial Association
Mission and Programs
The John Muir Memorial Association was organized in 1956 to preserve the John Muir home site and assure its transfer to the National Park Service.
Through the efforts of the John Muir Memorial Association, Congressman John F. Baldwin of Martinez,
and interested citizens, President Lyndon B. Johnson
signed legislation on September 3, 1964,
making Muir's former home in
Martinez a National Historic Site.
Today, the John Muir Memorial Association continues to work with the National Park Service to preserve the mansion and surrounding orchards, native plants and grounds and to interpret the life of John Muir and the history of the home and ranch. The Association assists the National Park Service with special events, including an annual "John Muir Birthday Celebration" in the spring, Ranch Day in the fall, a Dinner-Dance and Auction, and environmental education programs
including the Living History and the
Junior Ranger program
.
The Association is now focusing on a Capital Campaign Fund, to build
a new Visitor and Education Center for the John Muir National Historic Site in Martinez. The New Visitor and Education Center is by far the most ambitious project we have undertaken. We know from our previous activities that there is a great need for such a facility in order to fulfill our mission of preserving Muir's great work, and with it, the preservation of the natural and human history of our nation.
