Charles Keeler

1872 - 1937

Charles Keeler, photographer unknown, from the Portrait Collections of the Bancroft Library, Unviersity of California, Berkeley  
  • Poet and ornithologist, and a prolific writer.
  • Director of the Natural History Museum at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.
  • Keeler was a charter Sierra Club member. Keeler met Muir through artist William Keith
  • Keeler was Muir's cabin-mate aboard the George W. Elder on the Harriman Alaska Expedition (1899).
  • He worked for the preservation of the Berkeley hills
  • "To Joseph LeConte" by Charles Keeler, a poem read at the Wild Flower Show in 1907 at the LeConte Memorial Lodge (now the Yosemite Conservation Heritage Center), attended by John Muir.
