Maurice Adshead
1951 -
- Sustainable Tour
Operator from Reading, Berkshire, England.
-
Maurice (Mo) Adshead first heard of John Muir when
he was training to be a mountain guide in the west of Scotland. Muir inspired
Maurice to join the John Muir
Trust in Scotland. Maurice says, "At the John Muir Trust in Scotland
we have plenty of admiration for John Muir, with action being taken almost
every day to preserve some of the most spectacular remote and wild areas
of Scotland."
- Maurice says, "Muir's energy and committment to preserve these important
places on the planet was truly inspirational, but the clincher was
his ability
to read the future. Muir was saying life in 1880 was too stressful
and we
needed to relax in beautiful places like the Sierra Nevada seems to
have been
ahead of time."
-
Maurice also went on to establish Muir's
Tours, claimed to be one of the top five ethical tour operators in the UK
by the Sunday Times in January 2001. Maurice notes that the name Muir's
Tours is
taken from the Scottish born environmentalist, chosen to reflect the tour operator's
respect for the environment and the local people in their destinations.
The organization's website includes a page about John
Muir - Our Namesake.
- Maurice says,
"In my work I meet people from a wide range of places and the name
Muir's
Tours often gets the conversation going about John Muir and it
is surprising
how many people know of him. I greatly appreciate the legacy of
all his thoughts and actions."
