Israel Raymond

  • California state representative of the Central American Steamship Transit Company of New York.
  • Raymond was instrumental in the campaign for government protection of Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove in 1864, when they were given to the state of California. Raymond argued these land should be "for public use, resort, and recreation and are inalienable forever." To underscore the argument for preservation of natural beauty, he noted that "the summits are mostly bare Granite Rock" and so had little commercial value.
