Legend of John Muir - Lyrics

by Gail Lynne Dreifus

There's a legend of a man I'd like to tell
He knew these mountains and waters so well
He was born in Scotland in 1838
He had alot to do with Yosemite's fate

Chorus: Fa la la la la la la la
Fa la la la la la lay

The son of a farmer he worked hard on the farm
He was a gentle man never did any harm
To America his family did come
Not to mine for gold but for religious freedom

Chorus: Fa la la la la la la la
Fa la la la la la lay

John was a smart man an inventor they say
He sold them at fairs for little pay
He worked in a factory, almost lost his eye
Then he took off for the Western skies

Chorus: Fa la la la la la la la
Fa la la la la la lay

He went to California, the San Francisco Bay
He wanted the wild land so he didn't stay
He read about land known to you and me
He went to Yosemite Valley.

Chorus: Fa la la la la la la la
Fa la la la la la lay

He arrived there and the first thing he saw
Was the beautiful Bridalveil Fall
He spent alot of time walking around
Making notes of all the wonders he found

Chorus: Fa la la la la la la la
Fa la la la la la lay

He loved hiking in the back country
Admiring glacial activity
He studied nature in his free time
And wrote about each new find

Chorus: Fa la la la la la la la
Fa la la la la la lay

In 1880 John changed his life
He married Louisa, She became his wife
They had two children and lived on a ranch
He still traveled and wrote when he had the chance

Chorus: Fa la la la la la la la
Fa la la la la la lay

John made alot of ffiends along the way
He fought for preservation for land to stay
He helped form the Sierra Club in 1892
Keeping Yosemite a natural place for me and you

Chorus: Fa la la la la la la la
Fa la la la la la lay

John died an old man but his legend lives on
There's a spirit about him that will never be gone
Go climb the mountains is what he had to say
Get their glad tidings each and everyday

Chorus: Fa la la la la la la la
Fa la la la la la lay

There's a legend of a man I'd like to tell
He know these mountains and waters so well
Go climb the mountains is what he had to say
Get their glad tidings each and every day
