John Muir was one of the first Americans to realize that forests should be protected by the government.

It was largely by his influence that the Yosemite National Park and the Sequoia National Park were established.

Muir's contribution to forest conservation was honored in 1908 when a California Redwood forest was given to the United States and named Muir Woods.

Muir was born in Scotland April 21, 1838 and came to the United States when he was 11. His love of nature probably grew from his early life on a Wisconsin farm. He spent most of his life in California, writing articles, poetry, and some ten books on the beauty of nature.
