Calling Senator Hoodwink's Bluff

Beleaguered congressional anti-environmentalists have taken a new tack: burnishing their environmental image while continuing to vote for the same extreme pro-polluter agenda.

"Earth Day appearances, tree plantings and zoo visits aside, these same senators and representatives continue to work to undermine our landmark environmental laws," said Sierra Club Conservation Director Bruce Hamilton. "But we're not about to let their greenwashing go unanswered."

The Club has long been involved in exposing greenscamming. Now, with the help of Diane MacEachern of Vanguard Communications, the Club is producing a series of cartoons and mailings to the press entitled "Checks, Lies & Videotape," which profiles the antics of a fictionalized senator. Our two-faced star, Janus Hoodwink, is a glad- handing senator who shamelessly vaunts his own environmental double standard in the interest of re-election. The single- panel spots are designed to warn the media about the misleading campaign offensive that some anti- environmentalists will be conducting. The Hoodwink cartoons will be accompanied by background information on the issue in question and the vote in Congress.
