Produced by Friends of the Earth, Taxpayers for Common $ense and the
U.S. Public Interest Research Group, the "Green Scissors '97" report
identifies more than $36 billion in wasteful, environmentally
destructive projects in the form of 57 programs in 23 states. So far,
the Green Scissors coalition, which includes the Sierra Club, has
scored major victories over special interests by working with a
bipartisan team of congressional backers to kill 11 projects for a
total taxpayer savings of nearly $20 billion.
"Cutting polluter pork means two cuts for the price of one," said
Associate Field Representative Sam Collier. "The money saved can reduce
the deficit and be invested in pollution prevention and strict
enforcement of existing environmental laws."
This year, a strong emphasis was placed on targeting projects that
devastate our national forests, such as government-subsidized logging
roads and water programs.
