WHAT WENT WRONG: Rick Piltz spent a decade helping to publicize and distribute government findings on global warming. In 2003 the Bush administration hired petroleum lobbyist Philip Cooney to edit various reports, including "Climate Change Impacts on the United States." According to papers released by Piltz to the New York Times in 2005, Cooney softened key language, challenged findings regarding human causes of climate change, and suppressed scientific conclusions. (See "Decoder," January/February 2006) THE HEAVY: Cooney and his boss, Jim Connaughton, who remains chair of the Council on Environmental Quality. THE PRICE: Piltz resigned in 2005; he currently oversees Climate Science Watch for the Government Accountability Project.
