P R O C L A M A T I O N
by the
Governor of the State of California

WHEREAS, John Muir was the foremost champion of protecting California's pristine wilderness and experiencing the beauty of our natural environment; and

WHEREAS, his writings inspired the conservation movement and the creation of America's national parks system, including Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks; and

WHEREAS, in 1976 John Muir was named the "Greatest Californian" in history by the California Historical Society; and

WHEREAS, John Muir has made a lasting impact on America's environmental consciousness in his many roles as naturalist, explorer, writer, and conservationist; and

WHEREAS, California's youth can draw many valuable lessons about how to meet today's environmental challenges by studying the life and legacy of John Muir;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GRAY DAVIS, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim April 21, 2001 as "John Muir Day."

IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this the ninteenth day of April 2001.
