Press Release from California Assemblyman Robert J. Campbell
Announcing John Muir Day
Press Release
1989 October 5
by Assemblyman Bob Campbell
FIRST ANNUAL "JOHN MUIR DAY" TO BE HELD IN APRIL OF 1990
Assemblyman Robert J. Campbell (D-Richmond) today announced that the
governor signed Assembly Bill 476, which permanently establishes April 21st of
each year as "John Muir Day."
"John Muir distinguished himself as a champion of the wilderness. Because
of his efforts, generations of Californians have reveled in the glory of our
national parks, such as Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks." said Campbell.
The congressional act which established the foundation of the park system we
enjoy today came to fruition because of perseverance on the part of Muir and
others.
Mr. Muir began his conservation efforts during the Industrial Revolution,
when the social consciousness of America concentrated on the era's expansionist
philosophies which would have led to the devastation of the natural environment.
John Muir channeled some of the energy of the
time into socially beneficial goals that worked toward preservation of the
environment.
During his lifetime Muir became an accomplished writer, he served as the
lifetime president of the world renowned Sierra Club, which he co founded, and
he was named "
Greatest Californian
" by the California Historical Society in 1976.
John Muir has more geographic namesakes in California than any other person.
"'John Muir Day' will be a time to honor a man who left an indelible mark
on California and the world.
It is very appropriate for the people of California
to celebrate his legacy on the
anniversary of his birth each year." said Campbell.
Other provisions of AB 476 encourage public schools and educational
institutions to hold exercises about Muir and his contributions.
"The youth of today who will be charged with ensuring that a safe, natural
environment exists for future generation need to realize the importance of
successfully meeting the challenge. The State Department of Education has been
cataloguing a number of very interesting activities
which educators can use to deliver this message." remarked Campbell.
"John Muir Day" will be a permanent commemorative holiday on April 21st of
each year designated by a proclamation by the governor, beginning in 1990.
