John Phillips

Peter and Donna Thomas
  • John Phillips is Professor of Sociology, University of the Pacific, Stockton, CA.
  • John had known of John Muir from his California childhood. A casual reading of Muir's, The Yosemite led John to seek out some of the sights and activities (big and small) that Muir wrote about, and to share these with others.
  • John says that Muir's biggest influence "may be a wish to put on boots and ascend to the sublime sights, and ordinary, everyday sights, that are so plentiful everywhere. Or it may be to do my small part to preserve, protect and enjoy the beauty of this earth."
  • John volunteers every year as a host at the LeConte Memorial Lodge in Yosemite Valley. He serves on the Sierra Club's Leconte Memorial Committee. John is a steady, loyal member of Restore Hetch Hetchy. (No surprise, given Muir's impassioned plea for the preservation of that valley!)
  • John says that what he most appreciates about about Muir is that "Muir was so very energetic in his exploration of the mountains, and the whole world. He sought to enjoy nature, to understand it and to share his love and knowledge with whoever was willing to listen--and some who were NOT willing to listen!"
  • John holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Oregon. He is, by trade, a Criminologist.
  • John has written one book, "The Sociology of Sport." Yes, some of Muir's thinking was woven into the book. While Criminology and Sport are not natural places to discuss Muir's thinking, John has discussed at Sociology conventions Muir's energetic gathering of facts and his efforts to interpret those facts as a model of a good scientist.
