In 1889, Muir, LeConte and Keith began meeting regularly in William Keith's San Francisco painting studio to discuss the formation of an alpine club to protect and preserve their beloved mountains. With the help of attorney Warren Olney and others, they founded the Sierra Club in May of 1892. A new exhibition honoring the three close friends: Joseph LeConte, medical doctor, glaciologist, geologist, University of California science professor and administrator; John Muir, botanist, glaciologist, naturalist and writer; and landscape painter William Keith opened on January 16, 2005 at the Hearst Art Gallery of Saint Mary's College. Paintings, books, diaries and other documents on loan from the LeConte family and other private lenders illustrate the travels and triumphs of the three.

The exhibition is on view in the Keith Room of the Hearst Art Gallery, the Saint Mary's College museum, now through February 27, 2005 and will reopen from March 3 through April 24, 2005.
