Creation's Dawn (Ode to John Muir)

by Barry Hertz

(verse 1)
I used to envy the father of our race
Dwelling as he did in his new-made place
Entwined with life so to belong
Among the fields of Eden

But the morning stars still sing their song
From their home a million light-years beyond
And the world now not yet half-grown
Becomes more divine each day

Refrain :
Climb the mountains
And get their good tidings
Peace will flow into you
Like sunshine flows into trees
While cares fall like the leaves

(verse 2)
I have often heard it said
that trees are like imperfect men
they seem to bemoan their imprisonment
rooted in the ground
But they never seem that way to me
I never saw a discontented tree
They hold the earth most perfectly
With leaves turned towards the sky

Refrain :
Climb the mountains
And get their good tidings
Peace will flow into you
Like sunshine flows into trees
While cares fall like the leaves

(verse 3)
I have touched the morning sun
Felt its glow when day is done
From its heart all life has sprung
Here in creation's dawn Refrain :
Climb the mountains
And get their good tidings
Peace will flow into you
Like sunshine flows into trees
While cares fall like the leaves
