Ballad of John Muir

by Jeanne McDougall

About the Song

"The Ballad of John Muir," a song Jeanne McDougall wrote in 2003, first premiered in concert on April 20, 2005 in San Diego.  McDougall says, "There are a number of Muir's own words in the song -- I hope they are as inspirational to you as they are to me."

She continues, "Thanks to Muir's vision and leadership, we have been blessed not only with parklands and wild lands but also a new way of looking at our relationship with the world around us.  The words he wrote a century ago are timeless, ringing true to this day."

About Jeanne McDougall

Jeanne McDougall is a member of a California Celtic band, the Westlin Weavers. The band features a rolling line-up of veteran San Diego Scottish contemporary musicians and exciting up-and-coming musicians, often performinbg with a wide range of guest Celtic musicians and dancers drawn from across Southern California.  They play traditional and contemporary Scottish/Irish favorites as well as a variety of contemporary acoustic selections.  The repertoire is Celtic, but the flavor is definitely American, and they say, "if you hear a touch of bluegrass in our sound, well, we come by it honestly."

Jeanne is originally from eastern Virginia and began playing folk music in the mid-1970s.  A McDougall by marriage, her own Scots heritage is Wallace through her maternal grandfather.  Jeanne's range spans contemporary acoustic and bluegrass as well as Celtic music, and she is also an accomplished songwriter.  A resident of San Diego since 2000, Jeanne was a member of longtime Scottish favorites Glenfinnan and also teamed with singer Marc Townsend in the duo McDougall & Townsend.  Prior to moving to San Diego, Jeanne played in a number of bands over the years, including the trio The McDougalls with her daughters.  In spring 2001, Jeanne founded the House of Scotland Ceilidh Band and still joins the band for many performances.
