Muir Woods National Monument Post Card John Muir 1964 First Day Cover

The text on the painting side reads:

"Muir Woods Nat'l Monument named in honor of John Muir April 21, 1838 - Dec. 24, 1914."

The text on the reverse side of this postcard reads:

"John Muir - Scotland born, 1838. To Wisconsin, 1849. Became nature lover, inventor, scholar. Came to California and Yosemite 1868. Famous nature writer of many books. Climbed all mountain ranges of world. Persuaded Theodore Roosevelt to establish Nature Parks, Forest Reservations. Home in Martinez 1880-1914. Bill now in congress to make his home a National Historic Site."

Muir scholars will be interested in noting that this postcard is addressed to Muir scholar and historian William Kimes.




Muir has subsequently been honored with a 32 cent postage stamp in 1998.
