Making the Land Connection

Do you have a favorite spot that lies just outside a national forest? Or one that's just inside a national park? The Club's Land Protection Program is helping protect places next to or inside public lands with a priority list made up from member recommendations. Last year, nine of the Club's priority places were funded, including 2,700 acres of private lands along the North Fork of the American River in California, at left. The Mother Lode Chapter has been working to protect this area for 25 years. To see this year's list or for more information, go to www.sierraclub.org/wildlands/lwcf.

Club Calls Cheney to the Stand

Vice President Dick Cheney can add the Sierra Club to those who are demanding to know whom the Energy Task Force met with and what influence they had in forming the Bush administration's industry-friendly energy plan. The Club filed suit in January. The administration insists it met with the Sierra Club to help shape the plan, but, in truth, the task force met with Club representatives only after the plan was released. Find out more.

Reform Floors the House

Supporters of the Shays-Meehan campaign finance reform bill, which would curtail unlimited influence of big money donors on politicians, celebrated when the bill passed the House with a vote of 240 to 189. The House, which debated the issue for more than 16 hours, voted down 12 "poison pill" amendments designed to kill the bill. Next, it moves to the Senate, which passed a similar bill in 2001, and then to President Bush, who is expected to sign it into law. Find out more.
