"Nature's Prophet" - Sculpture of John Muir
by William James Pettee
Four John Muir sculptures
and busts available for purchase from sculptor Will Pettee.
Small-scale busts from the same sculptor are also available for your home: WJP
Studios John Muir Collection.
Title: Nature's Prophet
Artist: Will Pettee
Description: John Muir sits upon a boulder in
Nature’s cathedral, his
eyes alighting upon the wonders that have been the source of his daily inspiration.
His mind races to find a way to put into mere words a way to describe what
can only be experienced. Like the prophet Moses leading his people into the
wilderness, so too has he come to free us from our troubles and tell us all….
"Keep
close to Nature's heart...and break clear away, once in awhile,
and climb a
mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean." ~ John
Muir
From the Artist: “John Muir inspires me everyday to
be a better steward of the environment and to do my best to preserve and protect
it and I would like to share that inspiration with others. I am devoted to
keeping the memory of John Muir and his legacy alive in the best way I know
how. Being an artist, this has been to create him in sculpture. I hope that
you will join me in continuing his legacy by bringing this piece into your
home as a treasured and daily reminder of his gifts to us all.” ~ Will
Pettee
The pose for this piece is adapted from a familiar photograph of Muir
taken by Professor Francis M. Fritz in 1907:
Material: cold-cast bronze. Handcrafted in California, each
piece is cast in cold-cast bronze (which is a mixture of bronze powder with
a resin binder), and colorants and wax are applied to protect its finish.
Dimensions: 10 3/4” x
6” x 4”
Weight: Approx. 5 lbs.
Material: Bronze from Lost Wax casting. Each piece is
cast in cold-cast bronze (which is a mixture of bronze powder with a resin
binder), and colorants and wax are applied to protect its finish.
Note: A portion of the sales for both "Mountain
Muir" and "Nature's
Prophet" will be donated to the Sierra Club.
