About the John Muir Newsletter

The John Muir Newsletter was published quarterly by The John Muir Center for Environmental Studies of the University of the Pacific. for many years, in cooperation with the Holt-Atherton Library, the depository of the John Muir Papers, the Newsletter published articles, book reviews, historical photos, reprints of rare clips, and other materials by and about Muir. The last isssue of the Newsletter was published in 2015.

The first newsletter with the title "John Muir Newsletter" published by the University of the Pacific, began in January 1981, (Vol. 1, No. 1) running for five years, ending with the publication of the John Muir Papers in microform in 1986. In the final issue, it was noted that the newsletter was primarily "a means of keeping interested subscribers informed on the status of the John Muir Papers Microform Project," so when that project was completed, "by definition the raison d'etre for this modest rag will end."

A new series was later published by the university's newly established John Muir Center, beginning with New Series Vol. 1, Number 1, beginning publication in Winter, 1990. The new series was scheduled to be published in fall and spring of each year, starting with the Winater 1990 issue. The Newsletter was intended to "serve as a clearing house of information on John Muir, publications and events concerning Muir and his legacy, news of the environment, appropriate book reviews and announcements, short features and other items of interest." As of the Winter 2010-2011, the John Muir Center announced that in an age of high cost of reproduction and mailing, it has decided to follow the trail of other newsletters by going exclusively digital. The newsletter had a successful run until 2015, when lack of staffing and funding led to it going on a long-term hiatus.

Back Issues of John Muir Newsletter (off-site link last accessed 7 April 2022) are available in PDF format from the University's Digital archives. This now includes all issues- from 1981- 2015, when the newsletter went on a long-term hiatus .

As a public service, we are pleased to provide a full Table of Contents for the issues published between 1996 and 2016. (Volunteers are sought to add to the list for prior issues. Contact Us. )

The sample articles featured here on the John Muir Exhibit were typically published during the 1990's, and do not contain the historical photos and graphic art contained in the printed newsletter.
