The text reads:

"John Muir, nature lover and writer was born at Dunbar, Scotland, April 21, 1838. In his youth he lived on a Wisconsin farm, but spent most of his life in California, writing articles, books, and poetry. To his efforts are largely due the establishment of the Yosemite and other areas as national parks, and to some extent the National conservation policy."
- C. Stephen Anderson

Muir has subsequently been honored with a 32 cent postage stamp in 1998.
