Al Gore, the Sierra Club's choice for president, has the strongest record on the environment of any major party presidential candidate in recent history.

As a House member, he helped create Superfund legislation. As a senator, he worked to regulate toxic emissions under the Clean Air Act. As vice president, he was part of an administration that strengthened clean-air standards, reduced automobile pollution and protected wild places as national monuments.

Gore's platform encompasses many Club positions, including reducing pollution from large animal feedlots and supporting wilderness protection for 40 million acres of wild forests, the Tongass National Forest among them.

With Gore's opponent, Texas Gov. George Bush, presiding over a state clouded with smog and running with dirty water, and Bush's vice presidential candidate Dick Cheney itching to drill in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, voting for Gore is the most important step an activist can take toward protecting the environment.

This past year, he vigorously supported protecting the Hanford Reach as a national monument. He also co-sponsored a successful amendment to the Fiscal Year 2000 Interior Appropriations bill prohibiting the use of federal funds to build new logging roads on national forests. In March, Inslee introduced a bill that would fund salmon-restoration projects in Puget Sound.

The election promises to be a difficult contest: Inslee's district is famously fickle and the Republicans have made electing Dan McDonald, whose state environmental voting record has been 29 percent for the past four years, a priority. Environmentalists need Inslee representing our interests in Congress if we are to protect our national treasures.

In her race for a House seat, Democrat Eleanor Jordan has the opportunity to make the delegation from Kentucky significantly more environmentally responsible. As a member of the Kentucky Legislature, Jordan voted for smart-growth planning and against exempting motorcycles and certain other vehicles from emissions tests.

Jordan has focused on environmental, labor, health and education issues in her current position. She is receptive to the Sierra Club's concerns, according to Betsy Bennett, political chair of the Cumberland (Kentucky) Chapter. "I expect that she'll be supporting regulations for animal factories, working to end commercial logging on public lands and fighting sprawl," Bennett said.

The seat couldn't get much less green than it is now. Jordan's opponent, incumbent Anne Northup (R-Ky.) has voted to weaken standards for clean-air and water initiatives and to limit communities' right to know about harmful ozone levels. Her votes added up to an LCV rating of 0 percent.

As chairman of the House Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee, Rep. Sherwood Boehlert (R-N.Y.) is a key player in rallying Republican votes for the environment.

A supporter of initiatives for clean air and water, Boehlert has paid particular attention to the issue of acid rain over the course of his 18 years in Congress. In 1990, he co-wrote the acid-rain provisions of the Clean Air Act amendments, and last year he introduced a bill aimed at reducing acid-rain damage in the Adirondacks.

In 1999, Boehlert bucked party leadership and cast votes against anti-environmental riders, in favor of the Land and Water Conservation Fund and for strict controls on dumping mining waste, giving him an LCV score of 75 percent. Boehlert has a lifetime LCV score of 81 percent.

If the candidate is an incumbent, his/her League of Conservation Voters score will appear to the right.
