Hogs on the Run

Hogs on the RunThe Club joined Water Keeper Alliance last month in filing an unprecedented class-action lawsuit against Smithfield Foods, Inc. and its corporate hog factories. Filed under the Federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, the suit states that Smithfield is funded "by its illegal pollution-based profits." It violates environmental laws, relies on the American citizen to finance the cleanup and expands its business with the money saved, the suit reads. Ongoing lawsuits were under the Clean Water Act and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.

Arctic Progress

In a move that suggests that proponents of drilling in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge are responding to the public's outcry not to spoil the Arctic, President Bush has declared that backed off his intention to drill in the Arctic, saying he doesn't care wh. announced that his congressional budget will not include potential revenues from drilling in the Arctic.

Utah's Fencemenders

Club Adopt-a-Wilderness volunteers and the Utah Wilderness Coalition recently built three buck-and-rail fences to block illegal vehicle access to the proposed San Rafael Reef Wilderness Unit in Utah. They also covered over dirt bike tracks created earlier that week around signs that read, "sensitive vegetation area." The volunteer work, greatly appreciated by the Bureau of Land Management, could lead to a positive relationship to help protect the San Rafael Swell, said Marc Heileson, Utah conservation organizer.
