Norton Strikes Again
A 12-year U.S. Geological Survey of the impact of oil drilling on wildlife in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge concluded that several species would suffer significant harm. Interior Secretary Gale Norton immediately commissioned a new report. The new, two-page report memo concludes that the impact of proposed oil drilling on caribou would be minimal. "Scientists have consistently concluded what all Americans inherently know: Oil drilling will harm the wildlife that depend on the Arctic Refuge," said Melinda Pierce, Sierra Club's Arctic lobbyist. "The revised memo, which took a week to develop, cannot hide this basic fact."
Collaboration for Kids
This summer, low-income kids from Oakland will be hiking through Big Basin State Park in Santa Cruz, sailing in Monterey Bay while studying marine biology and navigation, and more. The summer trip is a collaboration between Oakland Parks and Recreation, California State Parks, O'Neill Sea Odyssey and the Youth in Wilderness Project. At right, Club Executive Director Carl Pope presents a grant of $27,278 to help fund the program.
