So that readers could hold our 43rd president accountable for environmental promises
made during the 2000 campaign, Sierra planned to print several salient quotes from the
president-elect. But with the outcome of the election up in the air at press time, we
instead present you with a claim from each candidate.
Each assures us he'll be the
environment's best possible steward over the next four years. It's up to Sierra Club
members to remember the promises-and make sure our new president delivers.
"For twenty-four years I have never backed down or given up on the environment, and I never will in my whole life. I guarantee it!"
-- Al Gore

"Prosperity will mean little if we leave to future generations a world of polluted air, toxic lakes, and vanished forests. . . The solution is not to eliminate the federal role in protecting the environment, the solution is reform-reform that sets high standards."
-- George W. Bush
