About the Sculptor-Engraver

Don Everhart II

Don Everhart graduated from Kutztown State College in Pennsylvania in 1972 with an art degree, and joined The Franklin Mint as a junior designer in 1973.

For several years, Everhart created collectable coins of currency from Barbados, Belize, the British Virgin Islands, the Cook Islands, Guyana and the Netherlands Antilles, the Philippines, and the Solomon Islands.

In 1980, he began working as a freelance designer, creating sculptures, figurines, and medals for everything from the commercial collectibles industry, including the Medallic Art Co., the Walt Disney Company, and the Unicover Corporation, to major universities like Georgetown.

Don Everhart was hired in January, 2004, as one of only five full-time sculptor-engravers at the U.S. Mint. Among his assignments with the Mint is the sculpting and engraving for the new California State Quarter.

Don has received many design awards, including he American Numismatic Association's 1994 Sculptor of the Year, First Prize in the 1985 National Sculpture Society's "Reliefs and Medals Show," Best of Show in the American Medallic Sculpture/Franklin Mint's "the New Medal" show in 1996.

One of his major accomplishments was designing the Presidential Inaugural Medal for Bill Clinton's second term in office. Other notable designs include the 1996 "Sylvan Grouse Guild" design for the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society; and the 2003 "Heartland Literary Prize" medal for the Chicago Tribune. His recent work included commemorative coins featuring 12 of the world's greatest aircraft commemorating the 100th anniversary of powered flight. These coins were legal tender of the Solomon Islands and struck by the British Royal Mint.

Everhart's work is included in collections at the Smithsonian Institution, the British Museum, the American Numismatic Association, the American Numismatic Society, and the National Sculpture Society.
