Directions to Fountain Lake and Muir County Park, Wisconsin


Fountain Lake is the U.S. boyhood home of John Muir.


From Minneapolis, Minnesota or Madison, Wisconsin, take Interstate 90 to Portage, Wisconsin.

If coming from Minnapolis, on I-90 take the State Highway 33 exit to Portage.

If coming from Madison, on I-90 take the U.S. Highway 51 exit north.

On State Highway 33, drive east through the town of Portage, and then a short distance east to County Road F.

Turn left (north) on County Road F, and drive about 10 or 11 miles.

You will see Muir County Park on your right. Turn in; near the road, there is a plaque about John Muir.

A dirt road takes you down to Fountain Lake itself.
