Colorano Silk Cachet John Muir 1998 First Day Cover
The cover includes a card which reads:
John Muir (1838-1914)
A native of Dunbar, Scotland, John Muir and his family moved to Wisconsin when he was eleven. His childhood love of nature and the wild inspired a life devoted to exploration, travel, and conservation of the American wilderness.
Settling in Northern California, Muir's great love was the Sierras. In 1892, he and his supporters founded the Sierra Club to protect these forests. He was the driving force behind the establishment of Yosemite, Mt. Rainier, the Petrified Forest, and the Grand Canyon as national parks, and his vivid prose encouraged millions to visit wilderness areas.
In recognition of his work as a conservationist, Muir Woods National Monument, near San Francisco, was created in 1908.
