Not So Fast

Pennsylvania officials will think twice next time before putting up half-a-million acres of state forest and park land for auction for oil and gas leasing without public input. After the idea went public, the Club's Pennsylvania Chapter pressured the state to complete an environmental analysis and convinced the state's Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to solicit public comment and schedule public meetings before making a final decision. Billing Wilderness

On May 11, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) announced plans to introduce the California Wild Heritage Wilderness Act, which would protect 2.5 million acres of wilderness and more than 400 miles of wild-and-scenic river. Companion House bills will be introduced by Hilda Solis (D-Calif.) and Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.). For more information, go to www.californiawild.org.

F(r)ee Recreating

If you are one of the millions of Americans who disagree with the "pay-to-play" agenda being set on public lands, participate in the Fee-Demo National Day of Action on June 14. Contact the chair of the Recreation Issues Committee, Alan Aronson at amara@ix.netcom.com to find out how you can help.
