Yucca Plan Heads to Senate

Despite a veto by Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn (R) and vigorous opposition from the state's congressional delegation, on May 8 the House voted 306 to 117 to turn Yucca Mountain into a high-level nuclear waste repository. The Senate is expected to vote on the plan in the next two months. Monument Management

The Department of the Interior announced in April that it will start developing management plans for 11 of the nation's newest national monuments. The agency appears poised to give preference to special interests, which would lead to increased oil and gas drilling and other development. "It is important that Secretary Norton listen to the American people who want to protect the biological, cultural, historic and spiritual values that each national monument honors," says Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope.

Scientists Speak Up

With the Bush administration proposing that a "special panel" manage national forests and Undersecretary of Agriculture Mark Rey increasing logging in the forests, national forests' wildlife habitat, waterways and landscapes are all at risk. More than 200 scientists urged Bush to protect our national forests in a letter released by the Club and its allies. Dr. Edward O. Wilson, Harvard professor and Pulitzer-prize winning author, and Dr. Anne Ehrlich, Associate Director of Stanford's Center for Conservation Biology, signed on. For a complete list of signers and a copy of the letter, go to: www.sierraclub.org/logging/letter.
